Are emerging markets a sound play?

Schroders' head of emerging markets Allan Conway for one believes the region's recent spell of outperformance has further to run, despite returning 79% in dollar terms last year.

"While potential for near-term volatility remains, we are expecting strong returns on a medium-term view, given the region's excellent growth prospects and robust fundamentals compared to the developed world," he says.

For years, commentators debated whether emerging markets could decouple from the West – basically plot their own growth path even if the developed world is falling – and Conway believes this has now occurred.
