Is there something fundamentally rotten at the heart of UK plc?

Within weeks of one another, two of the UK's largest companies, BP and Prudential, have been left looking chastened.

The banking sector was caught swimming naked during the credit crunch.

These are industries – oil & gas, and financial services – in which Britain is supposed to excel and which form a significant part of its overall GDP and market capitalisation.

Are they just going through a bad patch?
