An Icelandic budget airline is offering flights to the US for just £99 each way including taxes.
WOW Air’s flights from London Gatwick to Washington DC or Boston via Reykjavik will go on sale from 10am today and will be available on selected dates between 1 October to 15 December 2015, and 10 January to 10 March 2016.
The airline claims that as a result of its low prices, fares between London and Boston have dropped an impressive 14% industry-wide since it began operating the service in March 2015.
Skúli Mogensen, owner and CEO of WOW air, says: “Modern travellers are smart travellers. They prefer to spend less money on airfares so that they can spend more on experiencing their destination.
“We are thrilled to be able to make transatlantic travel accessible for people who otherwise would not be able to afford it. We made a promise to keep offering low fares and these new £99 fares are proof of this.”
The flights from Reykjavik to the USA are operated using WOW air’s fleet of new Airbus A321 Extended Range aircraft.
The airline’s Airbus A320 family aircraft carry passengers from London Gatwick to Reykjavik on the first leg of the journey.
Skúli Mogensen was an entrepreneur for 20 years before setting up the airline in 2011. Previously he founded OZ Communications in Montreal, which he later sold to Nokia in a multi-million dollar deal. The airline says he has been “likened to the Icelandic Richard Branson”.
