Food: Millions being pushed to the brink over rising prices

18th April 2011

The Bank suggests that prices have increased by 36 per cent since this time last year.

The price rises have already driven another 44 million people into extreme poverty while another 10m could join them in the next few months.

The high price oil and its knock on effect on fertiliser are partly to blame but the World Bank also wants countries to rein in the cultivation of bio fuels and increase land used for food production while in some cases it also wants to see the easing of import restrictions.
