Long term care: Middle classes will need to cough up

Currently if you need care means-testing kicks in when you have wealth of around £23,000 though the amount varies between the UK's nations while local authorities' policies also vary particularly towards forced house sales.

The Observer reports political sources who say the cabinet is split along party lines. Lib Dem Health minister Paul Burstow and the deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg are broadly in support but crucially the Prime Minister David Cameron and Chancellor George Osborne are much more concerned about the political implications.
