Making solar power sustainable

Generating clean power, reaping a healthy financial return  and all without lifting a finger, is still a luxury, but is one that is becoming much more common as the solar PV industry goes through a rapid growth phase.  But is solar really as clean a technology as we might like to believe?

In terms of energy use, the answer is emphatically "yes". There is a myth that more energy is used in manufacturing solar panels than is ever produced by them. In fact, even in a relatively cloudy country like the UK, the energy pay-back period is about three and a half years while in sunnier climes it is typically less than one. And these modules have a lifespan of more than twenty years.
